YOUNG JURY

IVÁN VIU LÓPEZ

Who am I, and what the hell does this have to do with cinema? I hate these application-form questions that force you to invent a believable character for yourself.

I’m 23 years old, and after a few setbacks, I started studying Audiovisual Graphics at the Art School of Huesca, a unique and wonderful place for which I feel deep fascination and affection. I don’t think I’m disciplined, ambitious, or any of those catalogue virtues people use to justify why someone deserves to be heard. I feel alien to that whole circus of expectations where people rot away without even noticing it.

I became interested in cinema when I saw everything around me falling apart. The screen seemed like a mirror in which I could recognize myself, where truth sometimes slips through small cracks; though I still don’t fully understand it. Our relationship with cinema is broad and complex, and trying to explain it here would be stupid.

I’ve spent more time feeling lost than certain of anything, and, strangely enough, that’s the most honest thing I can say about myself. It sounds like cheap irony, but cinema helps me avoid having to answer any of this.
