Eight year-old Ciela is the loneliest girl in her Yucatan fishing village. Ashamed of a prominent birthmark on her face, she escapes through her imagination. One day Ciela encounters a kindred spirit, an octopus with a birthmark just like her own. A secret friendship blooms between these unlikely companions, as the octopus brings Ciela a series of slimy “gifts.” When the townspeople begin to suspect a mysterious thief, Ciela is forced to make the most difficult decision: to say goodbye to her only friend.
