The retrospective of international experimental videos presented in INVIDEO is a panorama of video art from the 80s to the present. Experimentations and contaminations that merge in every genre of cinema and audiovisual arts: documentaries, video art, video dance, music videos, animations, experimental fiction, etc. A range of works that show the audience the long path covered by this genre; technological breakthroughs, changes of content and formal evolutions of an artistic trend that originally devoted to explore alternative and artistic languages, essentially conceptual and typical of mass communication media but presently represent a sort of audiovisual and creative “melting pot” in which the manipulation and total contamination of the various audiovisual genres prevail. INVIDEO presents two extensive chronological programmes which ranges from the first audiovisual experimentations of the pioneers of video art such as: Robert Wilson, Robert Cahen, Steina & Woody Vasulka, Gianni Toti... to the most recent video artists such as: Daniel Askill, Alessandro Amaducci, Anna Linder, Miloš Tomic, etc. All the works presented in this collection come from the archives of INVIDEO.
(FRANCIA - ESTADOS UNIDOS) -1988- Vídeo / Color / 8 minutos. Documental/Experimental.
A vision of New York inspired in the music of John Zorn, a complex artist from the group of young musicians of “post jazz”. The director works above all with music, rhythm, colour and movement. It is a poetic interpretation of the infinite paradigms of a metropolis through electronic effects and modifications of the moving images.
(FRANCIA) -1989- Vídeo / Color / 7 minutos. Experimental.
Robert Wilson brings movement to Cézanne’s painting, reproduced in the studio for the camera. Suzushi Hanayagi, a dancer from the Kabuki theater, performs the role of the woman, whose slight, almost imperceptible, facial and body movements -- together with mysteriously animated objects and strange apparitions -- bring the painting alive.
(FRANCIA) -1992- Vídeo / Color / 7 minutos. Experimental.
A part of a trilogy about medieval cities, Sienne is a collage of images and sounds that shows the suggestive moments of the traditions in the Tuscan city (The Canopy, the representational heritage, etc.). Boustani recreates the urban fabric without the need of using words, connecting the past and the present through poetry and tenderness.
(FRANCIA - JAPÓN) -2001- Vídeo. / Color / 24 minutos. Animación/Experimental.
An animation film composed of the real characters shot in Japan and the mixture of new and traditional (film, video, photo, illustration and artificial images etc.) techniques. A free and surrealist evocation of Japan and of the atomic bomb, in the form of an imaginary story, cruel and childlike.
(ITALIA) -2002- Vídeo / Color / 8 minutos. Experimental.
The video inspires in the text by Filippo Tommaso Marinetti Le mani. The director presents images of hands and fists that mime the text. Irony, intelligence and some visual surprises are the main features of this video made by Andrea Adriatico, film and theatre director.
(FINLANDIA) -2003- Vídeo / Color / 5 minutos. Experimental.
Movement of the body and movement of the mind: the video attempts to convey the link between these two movements in dancing. The bodies of the two dancers move through a dialogue with medical and scientific images, in a screen layout that uses various techniques of inlay and superimposition. A poetic study of movement.
(ESPAÑA - ALEMANIA) -2003- Vídeo / Color / 8 minutos. Documental/Experimental.
A work about the Spanish Civil War and the Franco dictatorship; period sequences, eye witness accounts, “manipulated” archive material and images taken from daily life today make up a mosaic of points of view, memories, visions which combine to create a genuine collective “stream of consciousness”.
(AUSTRALIA) -2003- Vídeo / Color / 11 minutos. Experimental.
The piece consists of three chapters corresponding to three performances by the protagonists: Ritual 1 - Kasia Werstak = birth; Ritual 2 - Daniel Askill = between; Ritual 3 - Jordan Askill = rebirth. Interiors and exteriors are wrapped in the same, cold and enigmatic light.
(ITALIA) -2004- Vídeo / Color / 3 minutos. Experimental.
An intense and suggestive journey through the atmospheres of religious celebrations held in various Sicilian towns. To the urgent rhythm of a Sicilian song, we are witnesses of a series of parades, with emotional, adoring, festive crowds of people. This passionate documentary film focuses in the anthropological aspect of the traditional Italian religious celebrations.
(ITALIA) -2006- Vídeo / Color / 4 minutos. Danza Experimental.
In an infinite space, suspended in a dream, a pregnant woman dances and contorts her body. The digital effects give the impression of being in front of a distorting mirror and the transition from black and white to intense colours make the image of this woman contradictory with her condition of mother-to-be.
(REPÚBLICA CHECA) -2007- Vídeo / Color / 11 minutos. Animación/Experimental.
The animation technique creates a playful and absurdly distraught universe, whose protagonist both observes and interacts with the world while lying on the ground. This backwards view on perspective renders the impossible possible.
(ITALIA) -2007- Vídeo / Color / 10 minutos. Experimental.
The film is a treat for the eyes, the ears and the palate. Thanks to the collaboration of a Sicilian restaurant, the authors have created an encounter between tradition and modernity. It is a music video-score that shows the audience the preparation of 4 dishes from the typical Sicilian cookery.
(FRANCIA) -1988- 35 mm. / Color / 7 minutos. Danza.
Based on Gustave Caillebotte painting Les Raboteurs de parquet, kept at the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, the director transforms the workers of the painting into three dancers who, through dance, speak about love and sweetly reveal the most significant moments of the staging.
(ESTADOS UNIDOS) -1989- Vídeo / Color / 4 minutos. Experimental.
The film uses the elevator as a metaphorical vehicle to reveal an outsider's gaze into contemporary Japanese culture. The continual opening and closing of elevator doors serves as a succinct formal device, as the viewer is offered brief glimpses of a series of natural, urban, cultural and domestic landscapes.
(ITALIA) -1992- Vídeo / Color / 15 minutos. Experimental.
A video poem about dancing and sport made from a series of meditations about electronics, on the occasion of the anniversary of the University of Bologne. A confrontation of artistic languages and techniques manipulated thanks to electronics with Valeria Magli as the protagonist of the dance in memory of Suzanne Lenglen.
(ESPAÑA) -1992- Vídeo / Color / 11 minutos. Danza.
A visual and a narrative experiment in which the actors are the shadows cast by the people in the city. The ground becomes a screen on which we see shadows wandering around like silhouettes. The world is turned upside down, and the shadows make us forget the bodies that cast them. The screen has banished reality and turned it into a shadow.
(ITALIA) -1999- Vídeo / Color / 3 minutos. Experimental.
Through the simple application of a digital filter over a series of previously edited images, Petracci turns dirty walls, wild plants, corners of windows and abandoned paving into glimpses of a nomadic and wandering life, represented by cats. A female figure repeatedly performs a kind of ritual gesture.
(REINO UNIDO) -2001- Vídeo / Color / 9 minutos. Danza.
Take one glamorous and ageing dancer. Trap her in the real world then smash into her private reality. Control her movement, contain her emotion. Well you can try but she has already beaten you to it.
(SUECIA) -2002- Vídeo / Color / 8 minutos. Experimental.
The video shows the phases of baking, from kneading the dough, through cooking in the oven to breaking the finished bread together. The idea is to bring out the poetry of certain simple, genuine, life-giving gestures. Sharing bread is the image of another kind of sharing, that of the artistic process.
(ITALIA) -2003- Vídeo / Color / 11 minutos. Experimental.
A journey through industrialization and mass production using different aspects of art and particularly using images from the industries of electrical appliances, motor vehicles, food industry and agriculture.
(ISLANDIA) -2003- Vídeo / Color / 5 minutos. Danza.
A couple waking up; as the sound of a tap dripping in the next room is heard intermittently, the physical tension between the man and the woman increases to the point where it breaks out in a fight on the bed.
(PAÍSES BAJOS) -2004- Vídeo / Color / 13 minutos. Experimental.
The video combines music and images caught up in a frenzied stream, like a ritual dance forcing the senses to the limit, to encourage purification and the rebirth of consciousness. Fish, seaweeds, corals, rocks, sand: everything is divided up into fixed images or the briefest of sequences which, re-assembled to the urgent rhythm of the music, leave us breathless, filling our eyes with new colours and shapes.
(ITALIA) -2005- Vídeo / Color / 4 minutos. Experimental.
The video shows us a sequence of vocal fragments pronounced by children, disjointed, dissonant sounds, a cacophony, representing emotions, surprise, hesitation. The spectator is acoustically catapulted into the range of onomatopoeic sounds typical of the bubbles in strip cartoons, experiencing a sound/video puzzle based on a musical form.
(AUSTRALIA) -2006- Vídeo / Color / 4 minutos. Experimental.
Insect is a journey to a space between dream and reality, where anything seems possible, but also the discovery of a wondrous vision where eroticism and sensuality are outside the usual restrictions of society. The artist exploits fragments of reality that she transforms and reassembles in a stratified, multiform exultation of shapes and colours.
(ITALIA) -2007- Vídeo / Color / 6 minutos. Experimental.
The video shows us an unusual Milan, slow and romantic through some non-touristy places immersed in a dimension without time. Water canals that cross the city, old abandoned factories, deserted streets, windows looking at outlying landscapes and security cameras wrapped in spider webs, are the reflection of a static and quiet city.
(ESPAÑA) -2007- 35 mm. / ByN / 6 minutos. Experimental.
A slow awakening in the darkness of night. Above the sound of the wind we hear the sighs and moans of two women, who on opening their eyes, discover the body of the person they love beside them. And so begins the invitation to the game, to love, to Eros, becoming ever more intriguing and seductive. The result is a polished exaltation of the beauty of the feminine form.
(ALEMANIA) -2007- 35 mm. / ByN / 6 minutos. Experimental.
When animation meets the world of the moving image, the results can be both interesting and significant, as in the case of this video. Here fragments of Super8 film, photos, and video material are assembled in such a smoothly continuous and profitable dialogue, that the boundary between one source and another is no longer discernable. Animation amalgamates the video-film universe.
(ITALIA) -2007- Vídeo / Color / 3 minutos. Experimental.
Confutatis is part of a project including 14 short works inspired by pieces from the renowned Requiem by Mozart and is a result of the elaboration and animation of dry, brittle leaves, from which a riot of abstract forms emerges, a source of light and color, which merge and enhance the music.
International Exhibition of Video and Cinema Beyond
Since 1990 INVIDEO - International Exhibition of Video and Cinema Beyond has established itself as an international benchmark for the full range of audiovisual production connected to electronic art and new technologies.
From the outset, the aim has been to create in Milan a permanent archive of non-fiction art from around the world - video art, research and experimental film and video, documentaries, music, theatre and dance video, portraits of artists, etc. Thus, year after year, INVIDEO undertakes an in-depth and wide-ranging selection process, after which the most significant Italian and international works are acquired for the archive and presented to audiences at a major Exhibition. As part of the annual event, alongside the rich and varied programme of screenings, there are meetings with video makers, introductory presentations to premieres, debates, retrospectives, performances and video installations. During the year, the works which have been acquired since 1990 can be viewed where they are stored, at the Medialogo centre of the Province of Milan. The collection is available for consultation by the public, in particular by students, researchers, cultural organizations and associations. As from this year, the INVIDEO archive can be consulted not only at the Medialogo but also at the DOCVA (Documentation Centre for Visual Arts), the documentation centre shared by Invideo, Consorzio C/O careof – VIAFARINI and Show Biz at the “Fabbrica del Vapore”. In recent years INVIDEO has also focused its attention to the promotion of video makers and their films in Italy and Europe, through the coordination of European Institutions and Festivals dedicated to "New Images". Thanks to its international team of partners and contributors, INVIDEO today can count on a permanent network of interchange and contacts with artists, critics, industry professionals, broadcasting and production centres, creating a truly global - but never uniform - picture of the world and its mutations, of the research into new languages of expression and new audiovisual horizons.
Since 2007 INVIDEO has become a competitive festival, aimed at promoting new talents. UNDER 35 is a prize money given to the best young director among the ones selected.
A bilingual catalogue (Italian- English) portrays every year the international situation with unpublished images and files and focuses on topical and theoretical issues.
INVIDEO is directed by Romano Fattorossi and Sandra Lischi. Programme and screening coordinator: Valentina Di Prisco. Organization: Elisa Gattarossa
