Huesca International Film Festival, following the line of its section ‘Cult Directors’, reveals in this edition the oeuvre on an excellent author, almost unknown in Spain. The chosen one is the Swedish director Jens Jonsson, considered as one of the emerging filmmakers in his country, of whom we present all his films, most of them awarded prizes. Jonsson has achieved, in the course of his short career, international prestige thanks to the awards received in festivals such as Cannes, Berlin or Sundance, among others.
Jens Jonsson artistic career didn’t start with filmmaking, but with illustration and graphic design, which he studied at Stockholm School of Arts, Crafts and Design. In that period he started to attract the attention of several advertising agencies. His drawings, which were published in Swedish magazines such as Magnum and Chili, gave him the opportunity of start drawing storyboards. At the same time, this allowed him to collaborate in several productions as an assistant producer, a job that aroused his curiosity and drove him to assume the role of director.
Thanks to some grants for young artists given by national museums and his perseverance, Jonsson presented his thesis at the School of Arts, Crafts and Design in the form of a film. The result was Stefania 1:3, a work which meant his first recognition as a filmmaker with the grant ‘1 km of film’ given by Stockholm Film Festival. This opportunity marked the beginning of the short film Avrättningen (The Execution, 1999) and launched his career as a director in this medium.
After graduating at the above mentioned school, Jonsson lived in Paris for five months with the help of a grant by Cannes Film Festival thanks to the support of the Cinefoundation of the festival, given to him for his work in the short films Reparation (2001) and KG for better or Worse (2002). Among his international awards we could also mention: Berlin Golden Bear to the Best Short Film for Bror Min (2001), which also got a nomination to the Best Short Film in the European Film Awards; the Grand Prix at Tampere Festival for Utvecklingssamtal (2003) and the Grand Prix of the Jury at Sundance Festival for Ping-pongkingen (2008), his first full-length film. One of the constant themes of his cinema, in the best tradition of Swedish masters such as Bo Winderberg, Roy Anderson or Ingmar Bergman, is the study of human relationships and family ties.
